New M Performance Parts for the 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe

When it goes on sale this fall, the new BMW 2 Series Coupe will also launch a new range of M Performance Parts. The official press release skipped the M Performance Parts announcement, but several BMW websites are now showing a subset of the upcoming offerings. As always, the usual suspects are present. At the front, the redesigned 2 Series Coupe gets an optional carbon fiber trim around the kidney grille.

Moving towards the bottom of the front fascia and you will be greeted by a carbon fiber spoiler which not only adds some extra downforce, but it also gives the car an even more aggressive look. The rear-end is not forgotten either. A beautiful and sporty carbon fiber spoiler sits on top of the trunk matching perfectly with the Alpine White color and the blacked out taillights. Of course, the diffuser goes through a functional and visual change and now features a more aggressive design in the typical carbon fiber material.

No other parts are currently shown, but it’s fair to assume that a side of side skirts and carbon fiber mirror caps are part of the M Performance Catalog, along with aftermarket wheels in different sizes and colors, and naturally, an aftermarket exhaust system as well. We expect to see the full range of 2 Series M Performance Parts being released in the next few months.

The new generation of the compact 2 Series Coupe is essentially one of the very few puristic models in the BMW portfolio. After the Bavarians decided to underpin most of their compact vehicles with front-wheel drive platform, the G42 model series is now the sole model in the low-end lineup to stay true to the brand’s core values: rear-wheel drive, a perfect 50:50 weight axle balance and legendary 6-cylinder inline powerplants.

BMW really differentiated the 2 Series from the rest of the lineup on the outside — its headlights, grille, Hofmeister kink, taillights, and overall design language is entirely different from everything else with a Roundel. However, the interior is similar to what we’ve seen in other new BMWs. A series of M Performance Parts will be available for the cabin as well.

2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe — Specs and Details Revealed | VIDEO

BMWs as we know it are set to change sooner than later. It seems that most automakers have their eyes set on 2030 as their transition point to full electrification, or at least very close to it. Which means the front-engine, rear-wheel drive cars that we know and love are likely to be gone by then, leaving the 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe as one of the last of the old guard. Naturally, fans are excited by its continued existence to this point and will likely celebrate it when it finally hits the road. Thankfully, it seems as there will be good reason for celebration because BMW has released some initial specs and details about the upcoming 2er and it sounds promising.

Some European journalists recently had the chance to get some pre-drives of the 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe, during its pre-production phase and, during which, the Bavarians gave out some initial details. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to test it but our German sister-site BimmerToday did get access to the pre-drive, so be sure to check there to find out how it drives.

The new chassis of the 2022 2 Series features a longer wheelbase (51 mm), wider wheel track (52 mm/31 mm — front/rear), an increase in negative front camber, stiffer rear subframe bushings, and a 12-percent increase in torsional rigidity. It still maintains a front/rear weight balance of close to 50/50 but BMW didn’t give out exact numbers.

Aerodynamics have also been improved and front-end lift has been reduced by 50-percent. Optimization of the front splitter, air curtain, turning vanes, and even the fuel tank cover have all played a part in reducing front-end lift, which will in-turn create better front-end grip, better turn-in, and sharper responses.

The 2 Series has also gained new, specifically tuned stroke-dependent dampers as standard equipment, similar to the G20 3 Series. Electrically-controlled adaptive dampers will be optional on all models, in conjunction with M Sport suspension.  Available as an option for the new BMW 2 Series Coupe, Variable Sports Steering aims to deliver even more precision when steering into bends with reduced steering effort when parking and maneuvering.

Speaking of models, there are only two model variants announced as of right now, though we expect more to be revealed as we get closer to market launch. As of right now, there’s only a BMW 230i and a BMW M240i. The former will get a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 245 horsepower (180 kW) and the latter will get a 3.0 liter turbocharged inline-six with 374 horsepower (275 kW). No word on transmissions but we suspect a manual will be available on the 230i but not on the M240i, as the latter of which will only come with xDrive, at least according to what we currently know. According to BMW, the 230i will get from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.9 seconds, with the M240i taking 4.5 seconds. Though, we suspect both will be quicker in the real world.

The BMW M240i will get an electronically-controlled limited-slip rear-differential as-standard, in addition to xDrive all-wheel drive. Thankfully, that same trick-diff will also be available on the BMW 230i, as an optional extra.

When the BMW 2 Series Coupe finally goes on sale, it will be manufactured at BMW’s San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico, for the world market. We can’t wait until its official reveal and, even more so, we can’t wait to drive it. This new 2022 2 Series Coupe may be the very last one we ever see, so we need to appreciate it while it’s still here.

Going Green — Which BMW Hybrid Cars Are For Sale in 2021?

The electric future is no longer a future — it’s quickly becoming the present, as more and more automakers are offering large portfolios of electrified vehicles. BMW has even increased its hybrid offering quite a bit over the years. However, the vast majority of customers are are a bit slower to adapt than enthusiasts, so knowing what’s actually available can be tricky for many potential buyers. Which is why we’ve put together a list of which hybrid BMWs are currently on sale, both in North America and Europe.

BMW X1 xDrive25e (EU)

The X1 xDrive25e is the smallest crossover you can get from BMW with a hybrid powertrain. It comes with a 1.5 liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, which combine to make 162 kW (217 horsepower) and can achieve a claimed 1.9 liter/100 km (123 mpg) combined between EV driving and the gas engine. It can also drive 49-52 km (30 miles-ish) on just electric power.

BMW X2 xDrive25e (EU)

It goes without saying, the X2 xDrive25e is just a more stylish version of its X1 sibling. The hybrid powertrain is identical and so is its fuel efficiency. Though, the X2 can get an extra kilometer or two of electric range, likely due to its superior aerodynamics.

BMW X3 xDrive30e (NA/EU)

This is one of the few hybrids that’s available in both North America and Europe. The BMW X3 xDrive30e uses a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to make a combined 215 kW (288 horsepower in NA) and use only 2.4 liters of fuel per 100 km (98 mpg US). So it’s not as efficient as its smaller siblings, due to its weight. It can also drive 43-51 km (26-30 miles) on pure electricity.

BMW X5 xDrive45e (NA/EU)

While most of BMW’s hybrid lineup uses small displacement engines, for efficiency purposes, the BMW X5 xDrive45e didn’t get the memo. Instead of little turbo three and four-pots, the X5 xDrive45e gets a 3.0 liter turbocharged I6. When combined with an electric motor, it makes 290 kW (389 horsepower NA). It can also achieve 2.1-1.6 liters per 100 km (112-147 mpg US) combined and 77-88 (47-54 miles) in EV mode.

BMW 225xe Active Tourer (EU)

For the 225xe Active Tourer’s powertrain, see: BMW X1 and X2 xDrive25e. It uses the same hybrid powertrain combo as both of those cars, just with slightly different economy and range figures. The hybrid 2AT can use 1.8 liters per 100 km and do 52-55 kms on electricity alone.

BMW 320e Sedan/Touring (EU)

For the lesser 3 Series hybrid model, customers will get a 2.0 liter turbo-four, paired with an electric motor, that makes 150 kW and can achieve 1.5-1.6 liters per 100 km. It can also drive on EV power alone for 56-61 km. It’s also available as either a sedan or a Touring (wagon) model and with either rear or all-wheel drive.

BMW 330e Sedan/Touring (NA/EU)

Spending a bit more will get you the more powerful BMW 330e. While it uses essentially the same engine and electric motor, the engine’s been tuned for more power in the 330e. It makes a punchier 215 kW (288 horsepower) and uses 1.6-1.5 liters per 100 km (147-156 mph combined, US). It can also go 56-60 km (34-37 miles) under EV power. So it’s more powerful but less efficient.

BMW 520e (EU)

The least powerful hybrid 5 Series uses a 2.0 liter turbo-four with an electric motor to make 150 kW and uses 1.9-1.7 liters per 100 km. As for all-electric range, it can go 55-61 km and only uses rear-wheel drive. It also can only be offered as a sedan.

BMW 530e (NA/EU)

This one’s available for both North America and the European market and packs a bit more power than the 520e. It also uses a turbo-four and electric motor pairing but it’s setup has been tuned to makes 215 kW (288 horsepower US). The BMW 530e is available with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and the car’s efficiency and economy are affected by the choice. The rear-drive 530e is surprisingly rated at the same efficiency as the 520e but the xDrive model is a bit less efficient, with 2.1-2 liters per 100 km (112-117 mpg US)

BMW 545e (EU)

Just like the BMW X5 xDrive45e, the BMW 545e also uses a 3.0 liter turbocharged I6 with an electric motor. It makes a combined 290 kW (389 horsepower NA) and achieves 2.3-2.2 liters per 100 km. It also can drive 49-57 km (30-35 miles) o EV power.

BMW 745e xDrive (NA/EU)

The BMW 745e is available in both Europe and North America and uses the same powertrain as the 545e, only with worse economy. It does around 1.8 liters per 100 km (122 mpg WLTP) and has around the same electric range.
