Is the E30 BMW 325i the Classic E30 You Really Want?

At the moment, used sports car prices are simply bonkers. You can’t buy a nice-condition ’90s Honda Civic Si without spending as much as a decent one-bedroom condo. It’s objectively ridiculous how expensive the used car market is at the moment. However, this isn’t a novel idea for BMW M collectors. Cars like the E30 BMW M3 have been shooting up in value like crazy over the past few years, making it nigh-impossible for the average enthusiast to buy one. Thankfully, there are other classic Bimmers that might not only be easier on your wallet but better for your soul. One such car is the E30 BMW 325i.

Back in the ’80s, prior to even the E30 M3’s existence, there was the E30-generation BMW 325i Coupe and it was the best version of the E30 3 Series. Even after the M3’s debut, there many enthusiasts that preferred the non-M 325i instead. Sure, the E30 M3 had an incredible motorsport-derived engine that revved gloriously and it had suspension and handling that made it superior to almost anything else on the road. However, the lesser BMW 325i, in many ways, was actually more enjoyable to drive.

The E30 M3 used a 2.3 liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine that made 192 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque, which wasn’t even a lot at the time but it revved beautifully. However, on the flip-side, the BMW 325i at the time used a 2.5 liter naturally-aspirated inline-six-cylinder engine that made 168 horsepower and 164 lb-ft of torque. Sure, the 325i had less power from a larger engine but it was easy to tune more power out of it, and still is. Plus, you didn’t have to rev the nuts off of it to make power, so it was much easier to drive quickly in the 325i.

Additionally, the 325i’s straight-six was far smoother and even made a better noise. During an August 1987 Car and Driver review, author Arthur St. Antoine wrote, “If I could sing like the engine in the new BMW 325is, I’d pack Carnegie Hall for weeks.” So not only was it easier to use, the experience of using it was actually better than that of the E30 M3’s engine.

Plus, the BMW 325i was more comfortable inside, quieter on the road, and much cheaper to maintain and repair. The E30’s S14 engine, while incredible, was a high-strung, racing-bred maniac, which meant that expensive maintenance was necessary to keep it running. The BMW 325i straight-six was a decade-old, battle-tested iron block design that was as durable as it was enjoyable. That meant far less maintenance and whatever maintenance was need was far cheaper.

Today, not only can you pick up an E30 BMW 325i for a fifth of the price of an E30 M3 but it will be far cheaper to maintain and repair. Financially, it’s obviously the smarter move. However, because its engine is smoother, makes more torque low down, makes a better noise, and is more easily tunable, it’s actually better to drive. Another point for the 325i is that you can actually drive the damn thing, without worrying about precious M3 parts. E30 325i parts are relatively easy to come by. E30 M3 parts? Not so much.

Want another reason to buy the E30 325i instead of the M3? Body styles. The BMW 325i came in Coupe, Sedan, and even Touring (wagon) body styles. The E30 M3 was only available as a coupe. Which means if you want a classic sports car that can actually be used with your family, the 325i is far better.

So if you want a proper classic E30, forget about the absurdly expensive M3, however iconic it may be, and stick with the humble 325i. Both your wallet and your soul will be happier for it.

Going Green — Which BMW Hybrid Cars Are For Sale in 2021?

The electric future is no longer a future — it’s quickly becoming the present, as more and more automakers are offering large portfolios of electrified vehicles. BMW has even increased its hybrid offering quite a bit over the years. However, the vast majority of customers are are a bit slower to adapt than enthusiasts, so knowing what’s actually available can be tricky for many potential buyers. Which is why we’ve put together a list of which hybrid BMWs are currently on sale, both in North America and Europe.

BMW X1 xDrive25e (EU)

BMW X1 xDrive25e m sport 02 830x553BMW X1 xDrive25e m sport 02 830x553

The X1 xDrive25e is the smallest crossover you can get from BMW with a hybrid powertrain. It comes with a 1.5 liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, which combine to make 162 kW (217 horsepower) and can achieve a claimed 1.9 liter/100 km (123 mpg) combined between EV driving and the gas engine. It can also drive 49-52 km (30 miles-ish) on just electric power.

BMW X2 xDrive25e (EU)

bmw x2 xdrive25e 33 830x553bmw x2 xdrive25e 33 830x553

It goes without saying, the X2 xDrive25e is just a more stylish version of its X1 sibling. The hybrid powertrain is identical and so is its fuel efficiency. Though, the X2 can get an extra kilometer or two of electric range, likely due to its superior aerodynamics.

BMW X3 xDrive30e (NA/EU)

This is one of the few hybrids that’s available in both North America and Europe. The BMW X3 xDrive30e uses a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to make a combined 215 kW (288 horsepower in NA) and use only 2.4 liters of fuel per 100 km (98 mpg US). So it’s not as efficient as its smaller siblings, due to its weight. It can also drive 43-51 km (26-30 miles) on pure electricity.

BMW X5 xDrive45e (NA/EU)

While most of BMW’s hybrid lineup uses small displacement engines, for efficiency purposes, the BMW X5 xDrive45e didn’t get the memo. Instead of little turbo three and four-pots, the X5 xDrive45e gets a 3.0 liter turbocharged I6. When combined with an electric motor, it makes 290 kW (389 horsepower NA). It can also achieve 2.1-1.6 liters per 100 km (112-147 mpg US) combined and 77-88 (47-54 miles) in EV mode.

BMW 225xe Active Tourer (EU)

For the 225xe Active Tourer’s powertrain, see: BMW X1 and X2 xDrive25e. It uses the same hybrid powertrain combo as both of those cars, just with slightly different economy and range figures. The hybrid 2AT can use 1.8 liters per 100 km and do 52-55 kms on electricity alone.

BMW 320e Sedan/Touring (EU)

For the lesser 3 Series hybrid model, customers will get a 2.0 liter turbo-four, paired with an electric motor, that makes 150 kW and can achieve 1.5-1.6 liters per 100 km. It can also drive on EV power alone for 56-61 km. It’s also available as either a sedan or a Touring (wagon) model and with either rear or all-wheel drive.

BMW 330e Sedan/Touring (NA/EU)

Spending a bit more will get you the more powerful BMW 330e. While it uses essentially the same engine and electric motor, the engine’s been tuned for more power in the 330e. It makes a punchier 215 kW (288 horsepower) and uses 1.6-1.5 liters per 100 km (147-156 mph combined, US). It can also go 56-60 km (34-37 miles) under EV power. So it’s more powerful but less efficient.

BMW 520e (EU)

The least powerful hybrid 5 Series uses a 2.0 liter turbo-four with an electric motor to make 150 kW and uses 1.9-1.7 liters per 100 km. As for all-electric range, it can go 55-61 km and only uses rear-wheel drive. It also can only be offered as a sedan.

BMW 530e (NA/EU)

This one’s available for both North America and the European market and packs a bit more power than the 520e. It also uses a turbo-four and electric motor pairing but it’s setup has been tuned to makes 215 kW (288 horsepower US). The BMW 530e is available with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and the car’s efficiency and economy are affected by the choice. The rear-drive 530e is surprisingly rated at the same efficiency as the 520e but the xDrive model is a bit less efficient, with 2.1-2 liters per 100 km (112-117 mpg US)

BMW 545e (EU)

Just like the BMW X5 xDrive45e, the BMW 545e also uses a 3.0 liter turbocharged I6 with an electric motor. It makes a combined 290 kW (389 horsepower NA) and achieves 2.3-2.2 liters per 100 km. It also can drive 49-57 km (30-35 miles) o EV power.

BMW 745e xDrive (NA/EU)

The BMW 745e is available in both Europe and North America and uses the same powertrain as the 545e, only with worse economy. It does around 1.8 liters per 100 km (122 mpg WLTP) and has around the same electric range.

50 Cent Features Some ’80s and ’90 BMWs in New Video

Maybe it’s because I’m a ’90s kid but Youngtimer cars — cars from the ’80s and ’90s — are among my favorite of all time and I know I’m not alone. After the now-famous “Youngtimer” video of Chris Harris walking through an incredible collection of ’80s and ’90s cars, those eras have become even more popular among enthusiasts than they already were. Which is why we love seeing all of these Youngtimer BMW’s in the new 50 Cent video “Part of the Game”.

As the official song of the upcoming Starz series, Power Book III: Raising Kanan, 50 Cent drives around in both an E30 3 Series Convertible and a Dakar Yellow E31 BMW 8 Series. The upcoming series is a prequel to the current Starz series, Power, and is set in the ’90s, hence the cars in this video.

There are a ton of great cars in the video, not just BMWs. There’s a killer Saab 900 Turbo and an A90 Toyota Supra, among several other great ’90s cars. However, the BMWs are the standout, as they’re the cars driven by 50 Cent. The first one he drives, the red E30 Convertible, looks gorgeous on its polished BBS wheels. The E30 Convertible was never a hugely desirable car but for some reason I want one now. Then he drives the E31 8 Series, which is even better. Who doesn’t love a yellow 8 Series?

For the making of the video, the cars were borrowed from BBS Boys, an enthusiast group in Newark, NJ that has an incredible collection of ’80s and ’90s cars. They apparently rent their cars out to movie and music video producers often, which isn’t surprising. If you want to shoot something set in the ’90s and need a modded car, they’re gonna have you covered.

Watch the video and check out 50 Cent driving around in some ’80s and ’90s BMWs.

Which BMW LCI Facelift had the Biggest Impact for You?

BMW isn’t unique with its mid-cycle facelifts (“LCI” in BMW-speak); every car company on the planet gives each of its models a refresh halfway through their life-cycles. The reason for such facelifts isn’t to make drastic changes or fix unpopular designs (although both have happened in the past) but to keep cars looking fresh as newer competition comes out. However, sometimes the changes are drastic and sometimes they do massively improve a car’s looks. Throughout the decades, BMW has had some of these so-called LCI updates that have made huge differences. So which LCI has had the biggest impact over the years?

There are a few that immediately come to mind. The E65 BMW 7 Series received a facelift halfway through its life and it made a big difference. When it first debuted, the E65 was unloved, to say the least, and its design was half of its problem (reliability was the other half but that’s a neither here nor there). When BMW gave it a facelift, and fixed its funky looking headlights, it actually became a relatively handsome car, one that’s aged quite well over time.

Post-LCI E65

Ironically, this new G30 5 Series just received a facelift and while the pre-LCI car was already great looking, the post-LCI car made headlines for how handsome it looked, despite being the oldest car in the segment.

However, the car that always sticks out to me personally is the E90 3 Series. When the E90 first debuted, I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. I liked the car overall, but the grille and taillights really bugged me. The grille had these little chrome mustaches above them that I thought looked completely out of place. Its taillights were also these little blobby jobs that looked frumpy and out of place. So while the car as a whole was actually quite good looking, especially in profile, I never really loved it.

Pre-LCI E90
Post-LCI E90

After its LCI facelift, though, the E90 completely transformed. Its kidney grille ditched the tacky chrome bits and its taillights gained a now-traditional BMW L-shape. There were some other minor changes as well but those two things really always stood out to me, personally. Now, after the LCI, I think the E90 3 Series sedan is one of the best looking — if not the very best looking — 3 Series’ ever made.

So, for me, the E90 LCI facelift had the biggest impact but, as always, style is subjective, so you may think I’m nuts and that another LCI was far more impactful. So which LCI was best? Let me know in the comments below.

VIDEO: Watching this E36 BMW 3 Series Paint Restoration is Therapeutic

Watching any type of type of instantaneously gratifying work is constantly incredibly healing. Whether it be painting a wall surface, power washing a driveway or describing a cars and truck, seeing those instant outcomes, of something obtaining cleaner or far better looking, always makes people really feel excellent. If you’re one of those individuals that really obtain off on that sort of thing, enjoy this video of an E36 BMW 3 Series Convertible obtaining comprehensive.

Continue Reading Below As an enthusiast of the E36, I’m always intrigued by videos of people making them nicer. Especially when they aren’t M3s. I possessed a standard E36 3 Series and also it’s been the only Bimmer I’ve ever before actually possessed myself (there have actually been numerous in my family members over the years, though), so I love watching videos regarding routine 3ers. In this video, we get to see a 3 Series Convertible go from looking like a twenty six year old cars and truck to one appearing like it could be in the showroom of a dealer.

E36 BMW 325i Violet 33 830x553

Honestly, however, the very best part of this video clip is the reality that the E36 is painted in

Boston Green, one of one of the most underappreciated E36 3 Series colors. Everyone bears in mind the remarkable M3 colors, such as Dakar Yellow and Techno Violet, but the regular 3er’s Boston Green was an excellent color. I ‘d enjoy an E36 BMW 328is Coupe in Boston Green with a black inside as well as a hands-on gearbox. What a maker. At the start of this video, the E36’s paint is in fact in decent shape, simply with the common surface scrapes as well as swirl marks you ‘d expect from an auto its age. At the end of the video, it looks like it requires a home window sticker label and a service warranty. View this old Bimmer, in a great shade combination, come back to cope with simply a buffer and also some compound. It’s splendidly restorative throughout a time of fantastic tension.

1986 Hartge H28 Coupe, competitor for E30 M3, is requesting for $39,500 on eBay

It’s unfortunate that popular German receiver Hartge closed shop. The BMW receiver created some quite outstanding autos over the years and earned the right to be listed amongst the greats out there. The company is no longer in service, yet we can still admire some of their older developments.

Today I came across an extremely unusual Hartge H28, a correct choice to the legendary BMW E30 M3 back in the 1980s. And a mint one as well.

The automobile is detailed on eBay as well as is requesting for $39,500 which is certainly not a whole lot taking into consideration the costs requested for practically any E30 design these days. I will not also state the M3 here now. Now you’re probably wondering what makes this auto unique as well as why is it called H28.

Well, that name originates from the displacement of the engine. Under the hood of the Hartge H28 hides a 2.8-liter M30 directly 6 engine with some add-ons.

E30 M3 photoshoot 02 830x554

The Hartge device has an unique exhaust manifold, new crank as well as pistons and creates 210 HP and also 270 Nm of torque in overall. That’s not all however. The vehicle likewise includes a restricted slip differential, special gauges, a brand-new exhaust, strut brace, antiroll bars as well as cam cover. The paint is declared to be original and also judging by the photos in the advertisement– we don’t have them– it appears in respectable shape for its age.

Unique Hartge F1 to go under the hammer this summer season, in Essen The

auto itself is a 1986 design and also has 29,000 miles on the clock. It was delivered over to Japan and afterwards sent to Philadelphia, where it is currently located.

In conclusion, the vehicle looks really good and also it is, undeniably, very uncommon. Hartge just made a handful of them back then and also possessing one will definitely be an advantage.
